Blog Issues, and a New Creature

I've been on the fence over whether to stick with a Wordpress blog or fully move to this Blogspot. In the end, I was dealing with way too many spam comments on Wordpress. So, tada! Blogspot it is. Here's a creature I've been working on lately. I began the drawing on a return flight from Los Angeles to Denver with a ballpoint and decided to switch to pencils so as to really spend some time refining it. I'll have to take it into Photoshop at some point to clean it up at some point, but I'm still deciding where to take it ultimately.

A Few Animals Meet Each Other

I felt the urge to mix a few animals together and came up with this: a bear, cow, bear, and maybe goat thing - owing to the four horns that appear here similar to how they appear on Jacob Goats/Sheep. I've been taking my time on this one, trying to crank out a little more than an average quick sketch for myself. Here also is life drawing from Starbucks on this rainy May 10 (June 2nd was a completely unrelated personal note to myself :-P ). Thanks for stopping by!

Big Red Dave

I'm finally feeling settled into my new home, new job at starbucks, and my routine overall. Last month my backpack was stolen, along with an almost-filled sketchbook. Kind of a bummer to have lost all those ideas, but more amazingly, my laptop, digital camera, AND checkbook were safely returned to me! Thank God. Here are a few pages spread out in my new sketchbook.

Drone with a Neck Brace

Did a random sketch on the back of a dorm lobby sign-in sheet during a break between tasks. Ballpoint and highlighter were readily available. When "randomly" doodling I almost always revert to the robotic-type characters I grew through the end of high school. So fun. All of the highlighters were kind of old and dry, so the color had a kind of rough texture. The colors are kind of "Metroid." Makes me want to experiment some more with limiting the colors to highlighters. The animal sketches in the bottom right of the page were unfortunate byproducts of it being a sketch in a public lobby :-)

BIOHAZARD

This might more accurately be called, "space marine knockoff...in a downtown." Sure was fun. I really enjoyed drawing the curvy, more organic bulk suit. I drew him on paper before "inking" him in Photoshop and painting in values. The buildings (to be finished later) were done entirely digitally. Still learning the software, but it's beginning to set in. :-)

Mr and Mrs. Bones

This was a piece done in over the course of two class periods. Got it to this point yesterday afternoon. Sorry for the picture quality. Gotta get me a nice camera :-)

There were two sources of light, one in white light and the other a bright green glow coming from Mr. Bones' direction. I had a lot of fun doing the ribs and folds in the dress.

Friar Harris

Preparing to paint this for next week. If I had a fireplace, and a mantle above it, this would eventually go over that mantle over that fireplace. My initial idea was just to paint a costumed character, but turned into a very literal and goofy take on "moral dilemma." Posing is my gracious friend, who agreed to shave his hair in the style of the Franciscan Monks, of which he already owned a costume.
